Day 3: San Luis Obispo, Cambria & Ragged Point

Sorry about no post yesterday.  As we headed north into Big Sur, internet connectivity dwindled to near zero.  The text part of emails were generally received but html messages and web browsing was out of the question.  I will catch you up with day 3 (Tuesday) now and, hopefully, post day 4 later this evening.

We were up early on Tuesday morning and headed to the dock for our whale watching excursion.  Alas, when we got there we were told, "oh, your cruise has been canceled."  Thanks for the notice.  Maybe we will try to do this "on the way back".  As we travel north along Highway 1, we encounter things that just don't fit with the current day.  So we just say, "we'll do that on the way back".  And maybe we will.

We also discovered at breakfast in the hotel this morning that there is "a cruise ship in town!"  This is cause for celebration in Santa Barbara.  Streets were closed.  Police were all over making sure that the bicycle lanes were open.  Long lines of taxi cabs filled the streets.  It turns out that our whale watching non-cruise used the same dock as the cruise line (tenders from the main ship).  As we were trying to find our non-cruise,  passengers from the cruise line were trying to disembark.  What a mad house!  With all of the cruisers in town, we decided it best to immediately leave town and head farther north.

Our first stop was San Luis Obispo, or "San Luis" to the locals.  Highway 1 and interstate 101 are common in this section so there is no real reason to tarry in between.  Of course, we were tired from an hour and a half of freeway driving and needed refreshment, so we stopped at the recommended Apple Farm Inn and Restaurant for lunch.
We spent some time shopping in San Luis where Bev spotted, perhaps, her next retail adventure.  JK
Although we had originally planned on staying in San Luis, the tourist information guy in Santa Barbara convinced us to head farther north.  Maybe the Santa Barbara and San Luis chambers don't play nicely together.  But I'd like to think that he was looking out for us.

We did some more shopping in the cute, small town of Cambria, just south of San Simeon.  Thank goodness for shipping.
Now that we are back on two lane Highway 1, we head a little farther north (about 20 minutes) past San Simeon (and the Hearst Castle which we decide to do "on the way back") to a little berg just into "Big Sur" called Ragged Point.  We stay at a great ocean front hotel and restaurant called the Ragged Point Inn with a spectacular ocean cliff side view from atop 300-400 foot cliffs.

The obligatory sunset picture.
A restful nights sleep with the door open and the sound of the ocean all night long.

Tomorrow, Big Sur for real.
