Day Six: Fredericksburg

We had a real luxury this morning because we didn't need to load the car to head to a new destination since we are staying two nights in hill country.

The guidebooks all say that the best place for breakfast is the Old German Bakery & Restaurant on Main Street in Fredericksburg and we joined the crowd.  While in the restaurant, we spotted friends from Cable who also are down here on vacation.  Small world.
When we arrived, Main Street was nearly deserted except by the restaurant and the restaurant was packed.  I ate too much, of course.  So much so that I turned down a free high end chocolate sample moments later.  The desolation quickly changed.
We spent most of the day shopping the downtown district of Fredericksburg only returning to the car when we couldn't carry more.  They have a nice mix of trinkets stores and higher end shops but a paucity of coffee shops.

Later in the afternoon, we toured the Grape Creek Vineyards and sampled barrel wine distinguishing between American Oak and French Oak and differing grades of charring.  I figured out why they want you to taste their wines ... so your judgement will be impaired and you'll join their wine club.  I was pleasantly surprised and I did join their wine club.  Come over for some Texan wine!
We ended the afternoon at the Wildseed seed and garden shop.  They don't have greenhouses.  They just have open fields.  Here are a field of poppies.
And Beverly got down in a field of bluebonnets.
So it was a pretty quiet day without much driving.  Dinner tonight was at a steakhouse.  Nothing special.  I'm keeping an eye on the Final Four while updating the blog.

Weather is still pretty good although it is cooler today with a morning in the mid-fifties and a high in the mid-sixties.  It is definitely jacket weather if you're outside for any length of time.  The locals think that it is cool.  They ask about spring in Minnesota.  When I tell them that we got a foot of snow yesterday, their faces turn to horror and ask if I'm kidding.  Nope, I'm not kidding.

Tomorrow:  Touring the outer areas of hill country and heading to San Antonio for the start of the children's book conference tomorrow evening.
