Across the country

We watched the sleepy village of Fjallbacka wake up this morning.  The Volvo looks right at home in "downtown" Fjallbacka.  OK, it may be a little bigger than some of the other cars.
After breakfast today we visited the Vitlycke Museum in nearby Tanumshede containing displays from the Bronze Age and many Bronze Age hieroglyphs in their original environment:

Then it was half way across the country (east-west is a lot easier than north-south) through farming country with lots of farm machinery on the road and up into the wooded central forests with rivers and lakes looking very Minnesota-like.  We pause overnight at the very nice Hestraviken resort

and restaurant where we partook in another Swedish meal:

Oh, the car.  There does seem to be a car in some of the pictures.  Yes, the car is a central focus of the trip.  It has worked flawlessly so far although I did notice in the news today that it may have already been recalled (computer glitch)!  I am absolutely loving the adaptive cruise control (follows your set speed or the car in front of you all of the way down to zero).  Many features I'm still learning to use.  BTW, the Swedes are big on speed control cameras, red light cameras but for speeding.  Luckily, Garmin knows where every one is located (so far).

Still little problem with the language.  A gal at the gift shop this morning spoke fluent English with no accent whatsoever.  We found out that she had lived in the USA working as a nanny and going to school.  The order taker at lunch today spoke fairly good English but had no clue what "decaf" meant.  How do you explain that?  We gave up.  Our waitress for dinner this evening listened as we ordered from the English language menu, nodded politely but obviously understood only part of what we said.  Otherwise, our order would have come out better.

The weather is fantastic.  It has been upper seventies in the day time with bright, sunny skies for several days with the night dipping down to around fifty.  The hotel host in Fjallbacka called it "Swedish summer."

  1. Is that a Birkie "S" bumper sticker in the back window??? :)

  2. Unfortunately, no. That is an "S" for "Sweden" and is required on all vehicles having temporary Swedish registrations as ours has. It is probably a way to mark "watch out for this crazy driver."
