Thursday, September 12: Girona, Pals & Calella de Parafrugell

Today we have booked a private tour northeast of Barcelona to (1) the old Roman town of Girona; (2) the medieval hill town of Pals; and (3) the beach town of Calella de Parafrugell.  I wish that I could pronounce the beach town.

My spirits are brightened on the way to Girona as fresh snow is visible in the Pyrenees in the distance.  While Barcelona was getting drenched, it was snowing in the Pyrenees.

First up is Girona with the colorful old town on the bank of the river Onyar.
This is part of the old Roman road, Via Augusta, once going all of the way to Rome.
The Catredral in Girona which was used as a setting in Game of Thrones.  Arya was here.
A portion of the old Roman wall
and one of the narrow streets of old town.  This is where Arya hid from the girls.
As we make our way out of old town, we pass a wise sign.
I rest for a bit in Independence Square
and have Sangria.
The general on the statue in the middle of Independence Square is sporting the "future" Catalan national flag.  There are serious about succession.
Next we head to the very picturesque, small, hilltop town of Pals.
Pals has the Esglasia de Sant Pere church
with a flower formed in the stones of the street just outside.
Since we are still in Catalonia, residents express their desire for succession from Spain by flying the "future" Catalan national flag.
Even medieval towns are now connected to the internet.
Lastly today, in the beach town of Calella de Parafrugell
we sit at a sidewalk restaurant overlooking the sea
and have lunch of fish,
shrimp salad,
dessert,

and Sangria.
We finish a very nice day with wine and nachos at an outside restaurant along the Las Ramblas de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Sorry, no more food photos today.  Check back tomorrow.
