Monday, September 9, 2019: Barcelona & Madrid (new trip)

The Bauer travel blog is again active as we begin a trip to Spain visiting Barcelona and Madrid & environs.  We are traveling with our friends, the Lanes.  We will spend four nights with independent travel in Barcelona before joining a Road Scholar tour for four more nights in Barcelona, train to Madrid and four nights in Madrid.

We have deviated from our usual method of traveling to Europe by flying first to either Amsterdam (Schipol) or Paris (DeGaulle) and then to our destination city.  Instead, we have chosen to first take Delta to Atlanta and then fly directly to Barcelona.  The advantage is that we avoid a connecting flight after the overnight flight to Europe in order to get to our destination.  The disadvantage is that we have that connecting flight at the end of the journey on the way home.  We'll let you know how we feel about that later.
First, we have the mandatory introductory photo taken in the SkyClub in Minneapolis with the Lanes beginning our trip.
We are through Atlanta and on our way across the pond.  Maybe a newer camera would take a better selfie.  No, we are not on this airplane alone.  Soon we will be joined by hundreds of others.
Approaching the European continent we are greeted with sunrise.
We hit the ground running in the morning.

[Editorial note:  This trip is being published on a two week time delay occasioned both by later-than-we're-used-to Spanish dinner times (leaving little time to nightly write the blog during the trip) and by my inability to travel with the computer and the Nikon camera due to a complication from hip replacement surgery.]
