May 26 (Thursday): Idaho Falls, EBR1, Craters of the Moon

Life was great this morning rising early, drinking coffee and watching the sun across the Teton Valley rise over the Teton Mountains.
Before leaving Driggs, ID we stop for provisions at Provisions.
We head south over the pass in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest to Swan Valley and then along the Snake River ...
to Idaho Falls where there is, in fact, a very nice waterfall.
As we head west of Idaho Falls, I find an unexpected attraction.  In the middle of nowhere (for a very good reason) is the Idaho National Laboratory which did (or maybe still does?) atomic energy research in the 50s and 60s.  The world's first fast breeder nuclear reactor, EBR1 (experimental breeder reactor one), long since mothballed, is open for tours.  As a former electrical power company engineer who has also toured the Enrico Fermi commercial fast breeder reactor on Lake Erie, this was great.  For Bev, not so much.
A highlight of the day is a visit to Craters of the Moon National Monument ...
where the wildflowers are in bloom ...
and I climb Inferno Cone.
We find a wine bar in Ketchum, ID ...
before we settle in at the Knob Hill Inn with a view of the Sun Valley ski runs from our room.
Goodnight all.
