Thursday, December 8, 2016: Mozart's Birthplace, Kaffee Furst, Advent Concert, St. Peter's Abbey Dinner

We set out this morning to meet our local Salzburg guide, Heidi, to tour Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birthplace at Pass Hagenauer Haus in old town Salzburg.  Notice the bright sunshine!

Pictures are not allowed in most of the house but I was able to get a couple of "allowed shots" in the entry hallway.  The first is of the kitchen of the landlord's quarters on the second floor.

The second is a hook on the ceiling of the second floor hallway from which buckets of sand hung for firefighting purposes.

Wolfgang lived in the rented quarters on the third floor.

Starbucks doesn't work too well in Austria because the kaffee haus tradition is well established and many people spend a couple of hours in a kaffee haus rather than just grabbing a cup to go.  However, they do have a cute little sign.  No, I didn't go in ... this time.

We are able to visit the very famous Kaffee Furst in old town where I have hot chocolate (again!) and a cake, chocolate of course.

We then have about four hours of "at our leisure" time which we spend shopping in the Christmas markets including buying socks and other items.

Shopping is so exhausting that we need to take another kaffee break, this time at Cafe Tomaselli

where I dine on wurst and weiss bier

and Beverly has a cheese platter.

The markets are interesting today because there is a futbol (soccer) in game in town and somewhat rowdy fans are roaming the aisles.  The locals are prepared however.  Security personnel are everywhere and riot police with helmets and batons stand shoulder to shoulder at the ready.  Bus routes are curtailed.  Happily, we saw no incidents.  We were not threatened.

More goods from the markets.

Road Scholar has arranged for us to attend a wonderful Advent Concert at St. Peter's Abbey.  Wonderful musicians.  It was amazing what the violinist could do with her instrument.  A real treat.

Before dinner in the Abbey's restaurant we pause in foyer for a glass of Gluwein.  It is an almost magical space.

And then we have a wonderful dinner, our farewell to Salzburg dinner.

After dinner we attend another small concert listening to Mozart, the Sound of Music and sing Christmas carols together.

Another great day.
